Where's the Love?
Everybody remembers the Comte de Lafayette, whom George Washington treated like a son. We got cities, towns, parks, squares, monuments and God-knows-what named in his honor. Today, for example, is the anniversary of GW laying the cornerstone for the White House and, whilst digging the Earth on what would become Pennsylvania Avenue, George wore an apron created by the Comte’s wife emblazoned with the Free Mason symbol. But you know who gets no love in this country? French Foreign Minister Vergennes, who took big time steps to support the Americans long before he was asked. In the end, it didn’t go well for him, his boss, King Louis XVI, or for France. Here’s what happened.
