Uber Alles
My wife used to sing opera, so I spent much of this afternoon listening to Lohengrin, Richard Wagner’s iconic 1850 opera, on National Public Radio, whilst sipping dry Sherry. That sentence suggests a more cultured person than I am at heart. Honestly, give me The Who’s Tommy over Die Walküre and PBR over Sherry every time. Wagner is thought by historians, of course, to represent the dawning of German nationalism, a movement that resulted in two world wars and vast economic catastrophe. Though the medium is quite different, the parallel to our time is the same.
