The query posed today - What Are Your Favorite Movies? - is an insightful one, one that when answered instantly reveals the kind of person you’re dealing with. If, for example, the reply is Old Yeller or When Harry Met Sally, you’re dealing with a guy whose tears are easily jerked by schmaltzy tripe. It’s equally telling if a person says The Wonder Rears, because, though a well-crafted cinematic milestone steeped in character development and layers of meaning, it is marred by poorly wrought dialogue and lighting issues. I’m a harsh judge of movies and I always correct the defective, pusillanimous comments of others when their views diverge from mine. In this, my wife describes me as “a thief of other people’s joy” to which I plead guilty as charged. There is a reason for this.
