It may have escaped your notice, but the First Minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf, resigned his post today after just over a year in office. At the weekend, he insisted he’d never resign, but Monday dawned bright and clear and he saw the light. In the gentle manner of the British press, he was instantly dubbed “Humza the Brief” and, more piquantly, “Briefheart”. His climb down came as a result of a squabble in the incomprehensible parliamentary system, this one involving a combination of the Conservatives, Labour, Greens, Liberal Democrats and a coalition of the Build-a-Unicorn Middle Christian Socialist Democrats. In his resignation address, Mr Yousaf’s voice broke when he mentioned his wife and children because he doesn’t want to spend more time with them. Several of his rivals have thrown their respective hats into the ring and that’s what we’re going to talk about.
