This Little Piggy Went to Market
It doesn’t pay to be a pig in Germany right now. Because of a host of factors, 1,900 pig farms went out of business in the country in 2022, following a drop of 1,600 farms between 2020 and 2021, according to CNN. In October, production costs for all German meat jumped fully 47%, year on year. A lot of economic details are behind the problem, chief among them knock-on effects from Covid and the war in Ukraine. As many as two million workers in Europe’s largest economy may be furloughed in 2023.
