One of the first people to suspect the Universe was expanding was a Catholic priest called Georges Lemaître. He was also a scientist who reasoned since everything was spreading out, at some point it all had to have been closer together. Fr Lemaître studied the math around this topic and came to a deep understanding of Einstein’s work - the notion being that space and time are woven together in a sort of fabric. This is where things got interesting.
