At one point, William Makepeace Thackeray, 1811 - 1863, was considered the greatest literary glutton who ever lived. Others, of course, have stepped in since to claim that mantle. Also, at one point, he was thought to be the equal of Charles Dickens and he toured the United States giving lectures to make urgently needed cash, just as Dickens did. I mention this because last night, my wife and I stayed up late watching Barry Lyndon, the 1975 movie made from WMT’s 1844 novel, The Luck of Barry Lyndon. We did so to see if it held up (it did) and to watch actor Ryan O’Neal in action. Mr O’Neal died last Friday at 82. There are some connections to be made here.
