The Christian Mass is laden with rich symbolism of varying degrees, depending on the denomination and where you are in the world. You can’t grasp the power of the ceremony if you don’t understand a few of the basics. I’m not a person of faith, but I revere a centuries old celebration and Christians deliver that every Sunday. One of the essential elements of their service is the thurifer, the person who carries the censer to the altar, assisted by the boat bearer, the carrier of the incense. The whole thing is elegant in its solemnity and history. I know this because I have a pal who’s thurifer. Here’s a bit of her story.
