After 53 years and more than 1,570 planes, the last Boeing 747 rolled off the assembly line in Washington state Tuesday night, according to CNN. This is a piquant moment for me because — of all the aircraft I’ve traveled on — the 747 is my all-time favorite. The Boeing Business Jet, the G-Vs and Concorde were swell, but there’s no sound like the whine of those four Rolls Royce engines at full throttle on a takeoff roll. That roll, by the way, requires a runway more than two miles long. It is in tribute to this glorious machine that I here relate the single best 747 flight I ever had.
