Only one American company offered the first pop-up toaster, the first electric steam iron, the first telephone answering machine, a portable radio, an indoor bowling alley, rhinestone dog collars, a London taxi-cab and a two-person submarine. It started out as a hardware store and was among the first retail shops to have a telephone. A hardbound copy of its 1912 catalogue is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian. Their 2023 holiday catalogue just landed at New Bellevue House and it’s full of the weird and wonderful stuff that’s kept them going since 1848.
