When you live and work in Manhattan, it’s not unusual to bump into celebrities, some of whom are happy to chat. I once had unplanned drinks with famed drummer Buddy Rich, who was great fun. I also, impromptu, palavered with David Brinkley, Tom Brokaw, George Hamilton, Billy Jean King, Julia Child, actress Dina Merrill, Tom Wolfe and said hello to Woody Allen and Jerry Seinfeld. There were others, too. I’m only naming those who were pleasant. For example, I won’t mention Broadway actress Patty LuPone because she wasn’t. But you can only have one favourite and mine might be a bit arcane.
