The first evidence of human life around Lake Piseco, NY, predates the Native American tribes who dominated the Adirondacks for thousands of years. The Mohawks in the region called the Algonquins “Hatirondacks” or “tree eaters,” because their diet consisted of tree buds and bark. Slightly changed, the word continues to identify the northern mountain region of New York State, home to Piseco Lake, where Leesa and I just stayed for a few days. Surveyor Joshua Brown met an “old Indian” living alone on its banks, a hermit called Pezeeko circa 1800. The lake is in the town of Arrieta, NY, the name of a Van Rensselaer’s mother. When there avoid Dead Horse Mountain and Mud Lake - not as scenic as they sound.
