One gift of travel is discovery and today provided the very thing in the form of the American Writers Museum in the heart of downtown Chicago. On the way to somewhere else, I saw the unprepossessing sign and almost gave it the skip, which would have been a dreadful miss. The place is a creative and interactive powerhouse, starting with no less than New World explorers in the 15th Century. It captures the essence of American literature and then some.
