Scandal Saratoga Style
By the summer of 1867, Clara Jerome, wife of a founder of the Saratoga Race Track, Leonard Jerome, had had enough. She left Jerome Park, their sprawling New York estate, and headed for Paris with the couple’s three daughters, never to return. One of those girls, Jenny, was named for Jenny Lind, the Britney Spears of the 19th Century. It cheesed Mrs J off that her husband’s affair with Lind was the worst kept secret in high society - and that he had the temerity to name his favorite child after the singer. There is a boatload of reasons to remember Jenny Jerome, but chief among them is the gift she gave the world.
