People often think where they live is special, that geography is destiny, and they’re special for living there. Folks in Southern California, for example, regard themselves as cool because Venice Beach, Brentwood or Beverley Hills. They, of course, are the only people who think this, but there’s no harm in it. Texans think they’re special too, because their state is truculent, smug and gun-toting. They, too, are the only people who think this. I live in Upstate New York, which, as it happens, is cool for reasons I now elucidate.
