Stephen Sanford (1826 - 1913) was a wealthy rugmaker in Amsterdam, NY, the burg in which I was conceived in January 1953. I wish to make clear he had nothing whatever to do with my conception despite what everybody says. Unlike me, he had a sterling education, first at Georgetown, then at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. He joined the family business and, when the factory burned down, he rebuilt it. Mr S became a Congressman, but found it too awful for words and left after one term, describing the other representatives as “skeevy”. His is a name Saratoga Springs historians know well and here’s why.
