The arrival of the fork on Western European dinner tables occurred rather late, long after the knife. Their item was bigger than ours, had only two tines and was called the split spoon - churchmen loudly opposed it. Because we have fingers and the knife, its use was regarded as an insult to God Himself. Churchmen remained cocksure of their pronouncements for hundreds of years. Sunday’s are their weekly moment in the celestial sun. They insist the Judeo-Christian deity is a total spork Guy and always has been. The dispute between science and religion is an old one and it’s had a variety of manifestations.
