There are an estimated 35,496 independent or non-denominational churches within the Christian faith according to the Association of Religion Data Archives. There is, for example, a difference between the Methodists and the United Methodists and there are probably subsets within those two groups, but I’m not asking because it quickly devolves into angels on the head of a pin. As Ricky Gervais puts it, “There are 2,367 gods worshiped on Earth right now, but yours is the real one”. Naturally, this is great news for The National Catholic Register, Roman Catholicism’s USA Today. They crow about the “freely floating” disunity of Protestants and the “universality” of the Church of Rome in op-ed pieces and in journalistic reporting as well, quite forgetting about universality of Cafeteria Catholics. The whole thing’s a merry celestial mixup, leaving true believers little left to do but pray for salvation. Here’s what’s really revealing.
