On this day in 1320, the Treaty of Arbroath was signed, the single most famous document in Scottish political history.
The treaty asserted that Scottish home rule would be inviolate to the End of the World and a Day.
And, in the intervening 700 years, the matter has never been challenged and has never needed to be thought of again.
