O Happy Day
GE sent me to India twice and I was charmed beyond measure both times. India and the Indians don’t try to do this, it just happens. Waking in a posh Mumbai hotel one morning, I pushed a button, the floor-to-ceiling curtains parted and the Arabian Sea gleamed unforgettably in the sunlight before me. It’s a land of stunning colour and great subtly as well. There’s a word in Hindi, called darshan, meaning to behold a deity, but in the larger sense, darshan means if you’re near someone who’s great, you become kind of great too. Only a land as sublime as India could have such a refined notion. It also has great humour, as well.
