The storied Appian Way, a very long and ancient road in Italy, and the US Interstate Highway system are separated by 2,335 years, give or take. Their design, construction, location, signage, upkeep and materials are completely different. The vehicles that travel on each and their respective speeds also couldn’t be more dissimilar. In popular culture, the roads aren’t the same either. Nobody ever thinks of the horrific I-95 Interstate, that runs from Maine to Miami, as romantic, picturesque and evocative. Well, I don’t anyway. But, incredibly, both were created for the exact same purpose - and it’s not what you think.
