My father’s life spanned nearly the entire 20th Century. When he was born, Teddy Roosevelt was president and when he died, Bill Clinton. John J Oliver was not educated, but he was accomplished, thoughtful and analytical. He saw, for example, how life for the working man was transformed. “Now a roofer or a plumber has a house, two cars, all the appliances he can imagine and, sometimes, a cabin on the lake. He and his family take vacations, they live well and he thinks nothing of it. That’s an enormous change,” he observed. I hope to live as long as he did - 92 - but that’s not up to me. Even in my time, significant differences are manifest. Take food for example.
