In the late 19th and early 20th Century, les tableaux vivants gained popularity in England and France. They featured live models portraying a sculpture or painting and were somewhere between a static work of art and theater. It was felt this enriched the viewer’s appreciation of a particular scene, but there may have been something else going on.
