According to a PR campaign by Barstool Sports, Syracuse, NY, is the best pub town in the United States. Barstool conducted a March Madness-style online competition to determine the winner and its owner, Dave Portnoy, has no complaint about the boon to his business. The sophisticated competition was among 64 towns and cities across the U.S. The winner of each bracket was determined by total points from social media where people posted their town’s unique hashtag (#SyracuseBBT, for example). Another way cities got votes was when people bought clothing and merchandise from Barstool, so no conflict there. I’ve never been to Syracuse, but I’ve been to a lot of pubs, both as a patron and delivering beer. My primary research has taught me much about the modern tavern. Here’s what I know to be true.
