Our Uber driver, Dave, has a sleek new Tesla, white and gleaming, of which he’s quite proud. This was our second trip with him, so Leesa and I knew how to operate the unintuitive doorhandles on his futuristic ride. We chatted about his history as a long-haul truck driver, a job that ruined his back, required spine surgery and put him out of work for three years. He then drove a taxi for a while. Dave now makes north of $120,000 a year with Uber, a gig that requires between 70 and 80 hours a week in the Tesla. He doesn’t mind. But there’s something even more astonishing about his story.
