Some evenings, Mrs Oliver’s preprandial tipple contains, amongst other ingredients, St Germain, a French liqueur made with fresh elderflowers, hand-picked once a year in the late spring. Every posh-looking bottle contains up to 1,000 of the very best elderflower blossoms, “resulting in a finely crafted, perfectly balanced and refined liqueur”. To enjoy the stuff, you really got to like elderflowers. It was created 16 years ago by third-generation distiller Robert J. Cooper and celebrates the famous Paris neighbourhood of St‑Germain‑des‑Prés. It’s that 6e arrondissement we visit today.
