Yesterday Upstate New York featured temperatures in the 90s, thus perfect conditions to view an exhibit on coats, frocks and heavy outerwear at the Albany Institute for History and Art. The display demonstrated - as clothing exhibits do - the intersection of vanity and the need for modesty and warmth. Some garments were elegant artistry while others were merely practical. Both types showed how fleeting style is. What you and I wear today will look stale and dated in 30 years - or less. In every age, clothes of any kind make an important statement. They communicate your socio-economic status, your degree of education, the kind of car you drive, your hobbies and your sports interests, among other things. A red MAGA baseball cap, of course, telegraphs your complete absence of intelligence. I’ve observed humans and their fashions over the years and here are my highly scientific findings.
