For the world’s Anglicans, Good Friday is serious and so is the special food item consumed on that day. The hugely symbolic Hot Cross Bun is on the menu and it’s freighted with meaning. If you grew up in CoE communion, you know what I’m talking about. Each bun is decorated with a cross made from flour paste which represents the cross on which Christ died. The spices in hot cross buns represent the spices used to embalm Christ after his death and, in the Middle Ages, bakers believed the cross on the bun had the power to ward-off evil spirits. So it’s kind of a big deal. Now a giant food company has thrown a spanner in the Holy Food works and it’s a gastronomic head-scratcher.
