It was only 67 years ago today that the North African nation of Morocco gained independence from France. The deal was struck with the hard work of Sultan Muḥammad V who encouraged the nationalistic aspirations of his people and then ruled as king from 1956 to his death in 1961. The United States and Morocco have an enduring and special relationship, one that began in 1777. Here’s what happened.
