Next Tuesday is National Wear A Hat Day in the United Kingdom and naturally I’m in the thick of frantic preparations. As the proud owner of a vast collection of headgear, the celebration presents rather a challenge. Does one go with the Trilby, the Bowler, my silk topper, a Swiss postman’s authoritative cap, my Balmoral or an East German Army helmet circa 1961 perhaps? What about my wide selection of flat caps? I’ve a cap that’s Harris Tweed on the outside and lined with Teflon so it keeps your head dry, but you can also cook soup in it. On such a special day, one is tempted to go a bit outré, as I now reveal.
