The name "Easter" goes back to a pre-Christian goddess in England, Eostre, who was celebrated at beginning of spring. The first reference to her is in the writings of the Venerable Bede, an English monk who lived in the late seventh and early eighth centuries. As scholar Bruce Forbes notes,
