God's Terrible Swift Sword
The Crittenden Compromise of 1860 was an attempt to permanently enshrine slavery in the US Constitution, thereby making it unconstitutional for future congresses to end the practice. It aimed to resolve the secession crisis of 1860–1861 that eventually led to the Civil War by addressing the grievances of Southerners and by putting an end to the abolitionist movement. Had it been enacted, it would have brought slavery as far west as the eastern border of the State of California. President Lincoln rejected the “Compromise” out-of-hand for a surprising reason.
