One of the towering figures of Psychiatry is Carl Jung, 1875 - 1961, “A man who has not passed through the inferno of his passions is a man who has not overcome them”. He was first friend, then adversary, to Freud and his work influenced not only psychiatric practice, but anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy and religious studies as well. At times, Jung’s life was tormented. His mother’s deep depression forced him into a completely interior existence. He had numerous extramarital affairs. Jung’s profound contributions were recognized while he was still alive, with honorary doctorates from Oxford, Harvard, Fordham, Allahabad, Benares, Calcutta and Clark universities. He influenced such diverse minds as Joseph Campbell, Jean Piaget, Arnold J Toynbee and Hermann Hesse. But what made Dr J financially independent is the big surprise.
