The plan for Washington, DC, and its major buildings was an international affair. A Frenchman, Pierre l’Enfant, came up with the layout of the new “Federal City”, Irishman James Hoban designed the White House and William Thorton, a Brit, created the Capitol Building. Pierre totally lived up to his name, which in French means “the child”, so much so, George Washington fired him. Here’s what he did, the rascal.
