The Language Lab at my l’Ecole Militaire was the apogee of modernity in 1968. French, Spanish and German were on offer and individual booths with headsets, microphones and complex controls allowed the cadets to focus on conjugation and vocabulary. The cadets, however, were an inventive group and they had other ideas. With the flip of a switch, you could hear other students as they worked on pronunciation and whatnot. This quickly made Language Lab far more entertaining.
