It may surprise you to learn that I have a rich history with chainsaws. At my homes in Westchester and Fairfield Counties, I wielded not one, not two, but three of the devices, felling trees large and small, cutting logs and threatening evil-doers. I enjoyed this activity because it improved the properties and afforded me time in nature with machines that kept most of nature at bay. I’m not inclined to mixing motor oil with gasoline, tightening chains, cleaning up debris, etc, but it diverted me from quotidian suburban life. One afternoon, a falling tree came thisclose to ending my existence; I survived the event by an eighth of an inch.
