When somebody asked if my book, a memoir, is funny, I wasn’t sure how to reply. It’s intermittently jocose, but not uniformly funny. The way I think of it is this. A standup comedian’s job is to make you laugh out loud. The humorist’s goal is to get a wry smile or a knowing nod of the the head. As my therapist says, I’m a wanna be humorist with comedic ideations. Readers get to decide what I’ve achieved, if anything. My relationship with funny is rooted in childhood and came about for a simple, yet compelling, reason.
