A decade ago, the American biographer and scholar A Scott Berg memorably wrote that, “Every presidential election a historic watershed” - and so they are. I can’t recall one such contest in my life that didn’t seem momentous, the harbinger of immense change. But none of them filled me with dread as does the election before us. None of those campaigns seemed as fraught as the anticipated duel between Trump and Biden. We have a manifest criminal who tried to overthrow the results of a free and fair vote and install himself in office illegally, subverting the will of the American people. But there’s a bigger issue that eludes me.
