After due consideration, I’ve decided to apply for duel US/UK citizenship. I’m US born and bred, but since my maternal grandparents were British, I’m allowed to do this under UK law. The move is a largely practical one, meaning shorter customs lines when my wife and I travel to London. It won’t change my status with the IRS and I won’t pay taxes to his Majesty’s government as I did in graduate school. The psychological bit is, of course, more complex. I’ve always thought of myself as deeply, passionately American and the dedication I’ve shown to the study of American history bears that out, so to hold another nation’s passport is more than a little jarring. Here’s the back story.
