When young, I urgently wanted to be a Foreign Service Officer because, as an old man, I wanted to look back and feel I’d made a contribution to my country, however small. The State Department, however, had different ideas. Just as well - think of the international incidents I’d have created. “They’re massing tanks on the Canadian border? Well, shit, Mr Ambassador, how was I to know that dishy waitress was a spy? She pitched a vase at me when I insisted Canadian bacon is really ham. Um, Mr Trudeau’s been on hold a long time, Sir.” Instead, I earned a living as a propagandist and there weren’t that many international incidents. Here’s how I look back on my quote unquote career.
