This is a big day in the new calendar year - National Hat Day, when we celebrate headwear various and recall the adornments that have graced our cabezas over the years. When you throw in baby bonnets, there are rather more hats than you might have considered originally. In my case, this includes a hard hat, a service cap, a tar bucket, a pith helmet, a folding Panama and a Glengarry, among others. Most of these were ceremonial, part of a uniform, but some were just for the pure hell of it. At a certain age, you wear what you please and no longer concern yourself if the general public is confused (that’s certainly true when I don my Homberg). Hats have an important role in history, of course.
