To understand the human condition, every day I read unspeakably weird things, like science journals, religious newspapers and The Wall Street Journal. Perhaps the oddest of these is MediaPost, a publication that not only takes advertising and marketing seriously, they make an in-depth study of those things. Today, with an interview of the McDonald’s VP, US Marketing, Brand Content and Culture*, they’ve outdone themselves. Ms JJ Healan’s focus in life is to understand “the experience adult McDonald’s customers have with Happy Meals”, which she calls “fan truths”. She opines, “It's about products such as those moments when for example, when you get an Egg McMuffin, and you've got cheese stuck on the wrapper. There's something that's great that you don't want to leave that cheese stuck there; you're going to eat every morsel. Or if you're a pickle lover or you're a pickle hater, you can actually be friends”. In my long corporate life, I was often in meetings with such people and when they spoke, I nodded knowingly, but I never understand a thing they said. Here’s more gibberish from this highly compensated executive.
