If you’ve been lucky enough to spend time in a British pub, you know what extraordinary places they are. Consider The Cherry Tree Pub, established 1372, which was popular with students when I was at university in Canterbury and still is. It seemed a gentle, comfy living room, where locals sat in overstuffed chairs by the fire, their dogs enjoying the warmth - as they did most every evening. No flat screen TVs, no political fights, surprisingly good food and nobody “wore out his welcome” to use a Britishism. But now an eccentric development is barging in on all that with an American name you’ll recognize.
