A Celestial Transport
Often at the opera, you don’t need subtitles to figure out what’s going on. Intonation, facial expressions and music go a long way to convey meaning. That can be true with songs in other languages, too. Consider Julie Flowis, a folk singer in Scots-Gaelic. In the haunting video below, a beautiful young girl in the Highlands pleads with a mythological water-horse to return her to her mother. She met the creature, common in Gaelic storytelling, at the edge of the cattle fold and now begs him to return her as she was. The real-life basis of the tale is horrifying.
