This morning I spent an instructive 35 minutes with an official of the State of New York. He was surprisingly well informed regarding norms of operating motor vehicles on our roadways and was all too eager to share these insights. His shirt collar featured shiny brass insignia, the letters DSP, which I learned stand for Department of State Police. I told him this was rather showy, gauche even, over-the-top as a sartorial matter, but he was focused on my alleged transgression. He misapprehended my misdemeanor utterly.
