Two unpleasant things occurred during dinner at New Bellevue House last night. First, Finial paired our pheasant dish with a 2021 Les Charmottes Nuits Saint Georges from Domaine Chicotot. When we entered the dining room I could not believe he’d done such a thing and moaned audibly. I was still reeling from this effrontery when Leesa informed me that Lucrezia Di Crescenti, the maid, is great with child, a girl as it happens. Young Miss Di Crescenti, whilst comely in a meretricious sort of way, possesses a nasty personality so I naturally asked who the mother is, an innocent jape that was met with stony silence by my bride. The father is one James O’Mallery, an employee of the Saratoga Springs Department of Public Works. James drives what in Britain is known as a gritter, the kind of lorry that spreads sand on ice-bound motorways. This spawned an even better joke - one of my best ever.
