Local Hero is a 1983 Scottish comedy-drama about a Texas oil executive who’s sent to the fictional village of Ferness on the west coast of Scotland to buy the place for his corporation to develop into a refinery. The movie hits on compelling themes - the nature of capitalism, avarice, the charm of village ways, young love and what money does to us. All of this is set to a haunting score by Dire Straights frontman Mark Knopfler. It may be the best Scottish film ever made. But it’s important for another reason too, a bigger one in fact.
